How to Make Money Buying a Website

There are several different business models that you can use to make money buying websites, and I will talk about two of them. The first model would be to buy websites that are already making money and continue to operate these sites, recouping your investment and beyond. The second model is to buy sites that aren’t making money, or very little, but have a lot of potential, then update these sites to operate for a profit or resell at a profit.

When you buy a website that is already making money, you have a guaranteed source of income. The trick is to find a good deal. When finding a website to buy, first you need to get a good understanding of how much that website has been earning. You should look at the earnings over the last six months and notice any trends up or down in sales. If the sales are trending down, look for a different site.

An initial offer for a site should be about four to six months of income for that site, meaning that if you bought the site, you would recoup your investment in no more than six months. So if the site is making $500 per month, a good initial offer would be about $2000 to $3000. You do not want to go any higher in your offer than the income that the site will bring in over a 12 month period. For this site that would be $6000. Trends on the internet can change quite a bit over a year, so you don’t want a site that will take a year to recoup your investment. Once you have recouped your investment, the rest is profit. So with a good purchase, you will be making $500 or more per month passively after about six months. Buy 5, 10, or 15 of these sites and you will have a great passive income.


A second way to make money buying websites is to find websites that are not fully developed, but have a lot of potential. Look for websites in good niches and that have good domain names. Don’t necessarily worry about the look and feel of the site, because you can change that. A great buy would be a website that has been around for at least a year, but the owner did not do much with it. You can often get these sites for $200 or less. Domains at least a year old will have greater authority with the search engines, and hence will rank quickly. You can update and market the website to bring in earnings, or you can revamp the site, and then resell it for a profit. If you have a good niche and domain name, others will want to buy the site, and will offer you more if it is a well developed site.
